Lessons in Leadership - Direct and Indirect Reciprocity in Surah Abassa

Hallmarks of an effective leader include gaining the ear of those that have power influence and control, engaging in acts of diplomacy, realizing your audience's perception as well as adjusting your speech and behaviour to result in the best outcome. The revelation of Surah Abasa serves to guide Rasul Allah (pbuh) and gently reminds him to guard his reputation and high status. This surah is often misunderstood as a critique of our Prophet. Our Messenger's (pbuh) heart is cleansed and does not disobey Allah (swt). He is the golden standard of a human being and the best of manners should be exercised when discussing the Seerah.  An examination of this verse can benefit us in how we pursue any position as role model or as leader in our lives within our station as Muslims.  He frowned and turned away Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified Or be reminded and the reme...

Spicy Ground Beef with Dates

Creating new dishes that the boys really like is a joy. This is an experimental dinner dish inspired by my discovery of baharat . I make up a batch of baharat spice and keep it in my pantry to have handy. I totally love this spice! Add diced onion and garlic and saute until onion starts to turn ...

We are only Travellers

I was watching a movie called Experimenter. It follows the life of Dr Stanley Milgram and the effects of his now famous (infamous?) and still studied experiment in human behaviour. Just to refresh your memory, Dr Milgram conducted experiments where the test subject was asked to administer electric shocks of increasing degrees to a fellow tester in an adjoining room. The test subject was prompted by a scientist exerting himself as an authority figure to continue the electric shocks even if the test subject felt he/she should not do so. The results of the experiment showed that most of society will follow orders regardless of their own ethical standards and in fact let a virtually unknown person control their behaviour to such an extent as to possibly murder another human being. There were a few test subjects who managed to stand up to the authority of the scientist and quit the experiment all together. If 90% of people will follow orders despite their own ethical inklings n...
